Japanese Stab Book Binding Workshop

Join us to celebrate the CAN Japanese Festival during the month of May, as we highlight the rich variety of traditional and contemporary arts and culture of Japan. There will be exhibitions for you to visit, plus events and workshops to experience during the whole month.

On Saturday 11 May, local artist and book binding expert Terrie Reddish will host an informative workshop on Japanese Stab Book Binding, suitable for beginners and experienced book makers alike. Create a handmade Japanese stab book to take home, have some fun and make new friends in the relaxed atmosphere of the CAN.

This workshop will give you an understanding of Japanese stab book binding, including paper types, folding, paper grain, and stitching, as well as using important book binding tools such as paper folders, Japanese screw punches, awls, needles, and thread. You will produce a beautiful handmade book, and take away instructions to enable you to work on your own projects at home.

Cost: $15 which includes materials (specialist paper, card) and an instruction sheet to take home.

What to bring:
- Cutting mat (at least A3 in size)
- Steel ruler (at least 500mm long)
- 18mm Snap Off Craft Knife
- Paper folder
- Tapestry needles
- Waxed linen thread
- Awl
- Pencil and eraser
- Peg or bulldog clip or mini spring clamp

- Teflon paper folders and ribs $12 – $20 (these will not make marks on paper like the plastic and bone ones do, and nothing sticks to them. Normal RRP$40)

About Terrie Reddish:
Terrie was first attracted to learn more about bookbinding after purchasing a 300 year old book in need of repair. Her contact with a traditionally trained and experienced conservator, Paul Taylor, led to bookbinding classes in 2005. Already a member of the Association of Book Crafts, Terrie became their Editrix for six years and continues to manage their Facebook page.

She has gone on to study with David Ashman, Australian’s Fred Pohlmann, John and Joy Tonkin along with UK’s Dominic Riley and Michael Burke. Terrie teaches bookbinding and pencil drawing throughout NZ.

Terrie uses restored tools and vintage letterpress equipment to create unique artists books, broadsheets and prints. Her artwork is often three dimensional and loosely based on book structures. Paper is her main medium.

It might be book board, marbled paper, Japanese tissue paper, handmade or recycled paper. Tyvek and Kraft-tex occasionally make an appearance, although they are not technically ‘paper’. Gold foil, fabric and leather feature as well.
