The Piano

Jazz diva Jennine Bailey blends her vocal talents with the Dixieland prowess of The River City Jazzmen.

Christchurch’s River City Jazzmen’s culture can be summed up in one word; authentic. The focus of the band never wavers far from the classic Dixieland vibe. The repertoire is faithful to the genre and the dedication of the musicians is the same. The line-up, now in its ninth year, follows the New Orleans’ model with skilled and inventive soloists: Allan Hawes on clarinet and saxophones, Tony Lewis on trombone, Neill Pickard on banjo, guitar and vocals, Jerome Raateland on drums, Dave Pitt on bass and Michael Fairhurst, the brass exponent! From ‘All Of Me’ & ‘Bourbon Street Parade’ to ‘The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise’ the RCJ repertoire boasts in excess of a hundred numbers dating from 1914 up to the best of the 50’s & 60’s trad. The Jazzmen’s word has been spread in concerts, festivals and private occasions from the hinterlands of Canterbury via Christchurch and Nelson to Wellington’s Jazz Club, Palmerston North and the New Plymouth Jazz Club and are reputedly at the top of the Dixie game in New Zealand.

Jennine Bailey has built an enviable reputation for herself in Christchurch and beyond with an ability to perform poignant ballads, jazz standards and stunning covers of such vocal divas as Eva Cassidy, Nina Simone and Aretha Franklin, With an Honours degree from Canterbury University Jennine is a regular on the local jazz circuit having also sung with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and the Wellington Vector Orchestra. Beyond study, she teaches contemporary vocal performance at the University of Canterbury, St Andrew's College and privately.
