Jurassic Forest Walk, Lake Rotopiko with Outdoor Kid

Walk around an 18,000 year old peat lake before entering a mysterious Jurassic forest, where kids can imagine how an ancient kahikatea forest would have looked.

This adventure has it all! A grassy meadow for picnicking, an activity trail around one of the Waikato’s most pristine peat lakes, and it's all topped off with a stand of Jurassic looking kahikatea with wizened buttresses looming out of the ground. And maybe a friendly fantail or two. Surrounded by predator proof fencing, this enclosure is a fun adventure with a mixture of well graded paths, boardwalks and dirt trails.

The trail has nine interactive activity stations for kids, and is part of the Toyota Kiwi Guardians promotion where you can receive a medal for exploring. Play eels and ladders, mudfish scrabble or look for Fred the Thread – the world’s skinniest caterpillar.

Accessibility: The trail around the lake is doable (if you are keen) for buggies but not suitable on the Jurassic Forest Walk.
