Kīnaki: Ngā reta Māori demonstrates the power of the pen through a sampling of letters written in Te Reo Māori to Sir George Grey.
Sir George Grey, 1812 – 1898 was many things to many people. The exhibition features original letters from the Sir George Grey Special Collections that were written in Te Reo Māori to Grey and his contemporaries. Recordings of the letters in the gallery space help bring these written taonga alive.
The exhibition gives a flavour of nineteenth century correspondence and concerns, as well as exploring the impact of letter writing and the complex relationships that existed between Māori and Grey.
It is a showcase for just 6 of the many hundreds of letters in the Ngā reta Māori / Grey Māori Letters series, which thanks to digitisation is now available and searchable via the library’s new online platform Kura: Heritage Collections Online.
