Kalisolaite 'Uhila has been recognized for his powerful works that take inspiration from his daily life; his performances drawing the viewer close into his perspectives and experiences of the world. Between August and October 2019, 'Uhila will use the gallery as both an open studio and a performance space to develop Kapa Ma - a drumming performance utilizing a stockpile of metal cabin bread tins..
In this work, 'Uhila uses his performance to explore personal rituals, actions and culture. He has a focus on Polynesian masculinity: the gender ideals of maie strength, movement and power, and ways of shifting these qualities to also examine vulnerability, humility and contemplation.
A Dunedin Public Art Gallery Visiting Artist Project supported by Creative New Zealand Toi Aotearoa.
