Enjoy this special opportunity to see inside four significant Karori Modernist houses and discover how new ideas about family living revolutionised domestic and public architecture following the Second World War.

Modernism emerged in the 1920s and 1930s, when the Bauhaus revolutionised design, teaching that machine age materials should be used for their inherent characteristics, rather than simply imitating historical decorative styles. The Second World War forced many European architects to emigrate; Mies Van De Rohe fled to America, Ernst Plischke to New Zealand.

Although limited by the palette of materials available in this country, many leading architects responded enthusiastically to the new Modernist ideas and Mies’s ‘Less is more’ mantra. Clients also eagerly embraced the fresh new approach to commercial and domestic buildings. Open-plan designs, simple clean lines, disciplined proportions and honesty of materials seemed more in tune with less formal ways of living and working in a new post-war world.

This exclusive architectural self-guided walking tour, presented by the Friends of Futuna Charitable Trust and The Friends of Te Papa, will begin at Futuna Chapel, 67 Friend Street, Karori, with an illustrated talk on Modernism and The Group by leading architectural historian Dr Julia Gatley, Associate Professor of Architecture, Auckland University.

The afternoon will conclude back at Futuna with a glass of wine, where you will be able to meet Julia and enjoy the stunning architecture of the chapel in the late afternoon sun.

Registration check-in on the day will be at Futuna Chapel from 12.30 pm, where you will receive the walking tour details, colour coded maps, the address and information on the four houses, and your name tag and instructions.

All houses are within a short walking distance from each other, and in some places access is steep. You will be asked to take your shoes off when visiting each house. Please note no children under the age of 16 or pets are permitted on the tour.

Numbers are limited, so book here now.

This event is presented by the Friends of Te Papa in association with Friends of Futuna.
