Krisha Holi Festival 2019

Auckland’s Kumeu will soon be awash with a rainbow of colour, as thousands of revellers come together to celebrate a much-loved Krishna Holi festival.

The Krishna Holi - Festival of Colours takes place on February 10 at the Hare Krishna Temple on the Coatesville-Riverhead Highway and is expected to attract even larger numbers than last year’s 10,000 strong crowd. Family friendly, and smoke, drugs and alcohol free, the celebrations will include DJs, live music, delicious vegetarian food – and of course, plenty of razzling, dazzling colour.

Organised by Hare Krishna Movement, ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) Auckland, the event is free to the public and open to all ages. Organiser Kalasamvara Das says it is a great way to celebrate their traditions and share their culture with others.

“The Holi Festival of Colours is also known as the ‘Festival of Love’ and it is such a happy, fun and vibrant event,” he says.

“We love the opportunity to open up our temple grounds to all Aucklanders and celebrate with them. People of all ages, ethnicity and religious backgrounds are welcome to come along.”

Originating in the Indian subcontinent, Holi celebrates the beginning of Spring and the triumph of good over evil. Its Festival of Colours is now enjoyed all over the world and is famed for the colourful powder that revellers throw on each other, leaving festival-goers coated in a vibrant kaleidoscope of hues. Powders can be purchased online and at the festival itself, and regular colour throws will also take place throughout the day.
