Taiko drumming is a form of traditional Japanese drumming characterised by with beautiful, strong bass tones, powerful group rhythms, and dynamic choreography.

In this 8 weeks course you will lean a number of traditional and unique Taiko pieces and basic taiko drumming techniques and rhythm practice.

You will play as part of an ensemble, which uses your whole body so it's a great work out!

At the end of the term, we will hold a public performance which students from the beginners' course are invited to participate in (participation in the performance is optional).

Cost: $80 or $75 if you have attended the Intro to Taiko Drumming Workshop (14 February 2019).

What to bring: Please wear comfortable clothing and bring a water bottle/drink.

Taikoza is a Wellington based Taiko Drumming performance group, dedicated to keeping the sounds and spirit of Taiko alive in the Wellington Region. The group was originally formed in Hiroshima in the mid 1980's and has been based in Wellington since 1991.

Since then it has performed at countless festivals and events throughout New Zealand like Cuba Street Carnival, Newtown Festival and the HighLight: Carnival of Lights festival in Lower Hutt. Most of the rhythms played by Taikoza were learned from Hiroshima's Taiko Hozonkai, which include rhythms that have been played for hundreds or even thousands of years.
