Learn to Play the Recorder for Beginners: Holiday Programme

A One Day Course for 10-18 yr olds

Playing the recorder sits under the umbrella of things that are "easy to learn, difficult to master"... So let's focus on the easy bit! If you've ever dreamed of playing a wind instrument this workshop is for you.

Using an instrument that has enjoyed popularity for eight centuries, you will pick up music-making skills that are essential to all instruments and discover the joy of playing with others. We will cover the basics of recorder playing that will enable students to play together in an ensemble setting, having a lot of fun along the way!

Those with little or no previous musical skills welcome, and every student on the course receives a free soprano recorder with thanks to Lewis Eady!

Taught by Pop-up Globe’s expert musician Oscar West who has performed over 450 shows on the Pop-up Globe stage.

Information about the facilitator

Oscar is Pop-up Globe's most capped performer who is about to chalk up his 500th performance with us. He was a founding company member in season one and has performed in Auckland, Sydney and Melbourne for Pop-up Globe.

From an early age Oscar has keenly pursued theatre studies in both practice and theory. He completed his MA in Drama Studies at the University of Auckland, combining literary and historical evidence of Elizabethan clowning with practical technique taught by Dr. Ira Seidenstein to illuminate the life and work of the legendary pre-Shakespearean comedian, Richard Tarlton.

Oscar is a lively performer of traditional Irish and Scottish music playing fiddle, bagpipes, recorder and whistles. He currently performs and records with several Celtic music groups and composes soundtracks for short films. His particular interest is rescuing forgotten tunes from 18th and 19th century music manuscripts.

He has recently returned from a trip to Ireland, France and the UK where he further pursued his interests of Shakespeare, clowning and music.
