Q&A with Gaye Jurisich.

Who are you and what do you do?
I am a multimedia artist who draws on all sorts of materials to get inspiration to create.

How do you work?
I work consistently day by day gathering ideas and sifting them. Sometimes they come to fruition sometimes they don’t stack up. If I produced every work I engineered in my brain there would be mountains of them.

What’s your background?
I have always been an art practitioner and I am a teacher as well

What’s integral to your work as an artist?
Having space, materials and ideas and likeminded comradeship.

What role does the artist have in society?
First and foremost: To ask questions, present aesthetic ideas and stimulation outside the norms. To realize beauty in some cases, to challenge stereotypes and provide opportunities for others to share in artistic journeys.

Explain what you do in 100 words
I take materials and I change them into objects that others can see as art, paint and sculpture materials.

What art do you most identify with?
I am always looking for ways to ask questions, looking for the abstract essential things, peering back to leave the core of ideas. Sometimes disguising

What’s your strongest memory of your childhood?
Sitting outside drawing the small flowers on the hedge and our farm horse.

What’s your favourite art work?
Guernica

What jobs have you done other than being an artist?
Parent, Teacher, Gallery owner

Why art?
There has never been a time when I have not thought about drawing and painting to express what I see. I remember this from times before I was five. There were always things around for me to use to draw with, so a rich, resourced environment was inspiring.

What is an artistic outlook on life?
I see visual stimulation everywhere and believe I always have, darkly emotional abstract with line and forms the centre of this.

Is the artistic life lonely?
I guess there is a loneliness in the thought processes, when you know there is ideas in your mind, you can’t see them but the urge and desperation of them trying to find a way out can be heavy going.

What do you dislike about the art world?
That it is still very male driven and political

What research to you do?
I am always looking and reading in order to trigger/ stimulate thought processes.

What is your dream project?
I always want to draw big and do large out door sculpture, so a huge outdoor installation would be fantastic. I mean massive.

Favourite or most inspirational place?
Landscapes where dark dividing lines and sea/ lake shape break the green. I am always looking for line and connecting elements. Ambiguity and distance are always draw cards.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Do it my way. Find the internal source.
I have learnt to trust myself to get it right (in my eyes, of course).

What wouldn’t you do without?
I can’t live without some sort of visual or aesthetic stimulation. I always strive to take risks and push my limitations.
