Are you hearing impaired or have auditory processing challenges? Lipreading is an invaluable life skill and this introductory course will help you with everyday conversation and managing hearing loss. It's also suitable for those who work or spend time with those who are hearing impaired.

Lipreading is a technique of understanding speech by visually interpreting the movements of the lips, face and tongue when normal sound is not available. Taught by a hearing-impaired tutor, the course will focus on lip shapes, vowels, consonants, similarities and differences.

The inclusive sessions are suitable for all levels of hearing impairment and will provide a supportive environment for those wanting to learn to lipread and will provide strategies for coping with hearing loss. Partners or family of hearing impaired people who are interested in learning to lipread may also like to enrol, as well as those working with, or wanting to work with, people with a hearing loss.

This course is offered at a reduced fee due to the support of the Community Education Centre.

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to:
- Recognise the respective lip shapes and identify “lookalike” consonant groups
- Demonstrate differences within the longer vowel groups
- Observe the subtle distinctions in lipreading shorter vowels
- Define different types of hearing loss
- Lipread everyday conversation
- Outline coping strategies for making speech more accessible
- Feel more confident in your daily interaction and conversation

Bring pen or pencil and paper. (8 weeks of 2 hour classes).
