Direct from Spain, dancer Ana Lloris Otero brings the passion and power of flamenco to Auckland Fringe.

The time-honoured tradition of a living culture comes to life when two dancers and two guitarists create and inhabit the Dark Energy that blooms from their collaboration. Using traditional forms that express a variety of emotions, this magnetic show delivers the power of flamenco’s driving rhythms and freedom of expression.

With the dressing room onstage, the typically unseen moments of camaraderie between performers are revealed. There is nowhere for performers to hide as hands shake from adrenalin and the tension builds through each number. By the end of the show the Love from the title is evident; love of flamenco, love for each other, as the performers throw everything they have into the Dark Energy pot.

Lead dancer Ana Lloris Otero brings her wealth of international performing experience to this production. Among her maestros are Carmen La Talegona, La Truco, María Juncal, Inmaculada Ortega, Domingo Ortega, La Lupi, Concha Jareño, Alfonso Losa and Marco Flores, and more.

She has performed in numerous works in Spain and abroad, both as a bailaora in tablaos such as El Corral de la Pacheca, Cardamom, Sala Clamores, El Barco, Café del Duende, La Bulería, Radio City, La Clacla, etc. and dance companies (Ballet Flamenco de Madrid, Prodigio BAF Flamenco, Cía. Tito Losada). She has performed in many countries including Japan, Morocco, Algeria, Greece, China, Turkey, France, Russia, the Czech Republic and New Zealand.

Ana is joined by Auckland performers: Amira Brock (dancer), Sandy Schock and Richard Aylett (guitarists), who have pursued flamenco for decades with dedicated study and regular performances.

Amira has studied with and performed alongside Spanish flamenco professionals. Sandy started playing flamenco guitar in South Africa, lived in Spain to further her studies, and has toured internationally. Sandy and Richard often perform as a duo and have been praised for “delighting audiences with their aggressive and competitive Flamenco music”.

Mysterious, magical and magnetic – Love, Life and Dark Energy is a powerful expression of the human emotions that are both intensely personal and universally shared.
