Luminate2019

Luminate is a vibrant New Zealand summer festival of cutting-edge live & electronic music, visual & performing arts, inspirational workshops, pioneering innovations and environmental initiatives.

Luminate is a unique and transformational festival set among the beech studded karst features on Takaka Hill. With 5 zones of music, over 7 days there is a schedule of 200 music acts which guarantees a wide diversity to match many tastes.

International and New Zealand artists bring a stunning array of original music spanning most genres from world music, sacred bass, jazz, psytrance, reggae, electro-swing, dub, house, folk and fusion. Come and immerse in an ever-changing and unifying musical adventure!

So far the line-up includes Adham Shaik, Alpaca Social Club, Altruism, AtTyA, B-Syde, Desert Dwellers, DOV1, Formidable Vegetable, Gumnut, Hello Tut Tut, Jesse Morris & the Shakedown, Kallidad, Karen Hunter, Kukan Dub Lagan, Lost Keys, Lucid Gecko, Mad Hallelujah Tribe, Matiu Te Huki, My Baby, Neurorythmic, Prosad, San & Tack, Sky Eater, Sonic Butterfly, Sun Salute, Symbolico, THe Jews Brothers Band, The Seven Ups, Totara Collective, UngusUngusUngus, Virelai, Wild Marmalade, Yurt Party and more!

An integral aspect of Luminate is the wide range of interactive workshops – the Knowledge & Inspirational Sharing Sessions (KISS). Spanning 5 zones, there are approximately 200 workshops from experienced presenters on a wide range of inspiring topics and interesting activities.

Sessions include various forms of yoga, movement & dance, permaculture & sustainability, health & wellbeing, native & medicinal plants, music, voice, sound healing, traditional arts & crafts, ancient mysteries, sacred geometry, theatre and lots more. There is also a dedicated Circus Space where you can learn circus skills and the flow arts from professionals passionate about sharing their craft.

Luminate also has a thriving Village Market with a colourful array of arts, crafts and festival fashion along with a wide range of food outlets that provide fresh and flavourful fare to keep you well fuelled during the festival. Between sessions swing by for a healthy smoothie or enjoy some raw and nutritious treats at the Superfood Café.

Tasty pizza can be found in the market space, with vegan options. Kai Organic focusses on vegetarian and nutrient dense food, and the cafes in the Chillounge and Electronic zone provide energizing eats and beverages to keep you going through the long hours.

Luminate is built on a foundation of ground-breaking ecological initiatives. Solar and wood-fired stoves provide hot water. Toilets are the ecologically friendly, composting variety and all food scraps are composted on site. Our waste minimisation initiatives bring awareness to the need to reduce our dependence on single-use and pervasive plastics, and to limit the amount of waste produced at the outset.

Luminate has been nominated in the Top 5 Outstanding Green Event at the FestXawards being held in December. We are delighted to announce that Luminate has been nominated as one of the top five finalists for “Outstanding Green Event” in the 2018 global FestX Awards! You can view a short 2 minute video on Luminate's ecological innovations that will screen at the FestX awards during the XLive conference by following this link - https://youtu.be/-lswiuLAKM0.

We hope you enjoy the overview of the festival and the magical land of Pikikirunga-Canaan Downs.

Luminate runs for 8 days during Lughnasadgh (“Lunasa”), midway between summer solstice & autumn equinox, in Aotearoa / New Zealand. We look forward to welcoming you to Canaan Downs – Pikikirunga and the transformational community of Luminate!
