Part two of our three class series with master woodworker John Shaw taught at The Warren, a community workshop on Cross Street, behind Karangahape Road.
This two-day hands-on workshop is for all levels of ability, from complete beginners wanting to get started, to experienced woodworkers wanting to review their skills or up their game.
What you will learn:
- Sharpen, set up and use all the tools that are required to mark out joints accurately
- Learn a simple traditional system of marking out
- Cut and fit a set of interlocking mortise joints
- Set up a smoothing plane and plane the three parts of the puzzle to perfectly interlock with each other
- Apply a simple shellac and wax finish
If time permits, a second six-part puzzle will be undertaken to reinforce techniques.
The emphasis throughout will be on establishing and maintaining accuracy, controlling tools and repetition of techniques to develop skill.
We will also discuss and try a range of bench tools to determine what makes up a good basic tool kit and where to gather them from.
