Selwyn Community Education is based at Selwyn College, 203 Kohimarama Rd, Kohimarama, Auckland.

This course, new for 2019, runs over four Tuesdays 7 - 9 PM starting 7 May 2019.

The history of New Zealand is both challenging and astounding. We will embark on a journey of discovery tracing the earliest known Polynesian migration to NZ in the 8th century AD. Our journey will take us from an appreciation of ancient Māori taonga, through to contemporary expressions of art and culture in NZ. Learn how Māori have honoured and nurtured creativity throughout the challenges of colonisation and how Māori art continues to deliver a powerful art discourse today.

Expected learning outcomes:
- Understand the history of Māori in NZ
- Understand how the 'discovery' of NZ challenged cultural art practices
- Understand how Māori have responded to colonial challenges through artistic expression
- Discuss contemporary New Zealand art practices

Who should attend? Anyone with a passion for New Zealand and our history should come and learn more about the expression of our cultural art practices. Be inspired by a deeper understanding of Māori history and culture.

About the tutor Libby Brookbanks: I had the pleasure of teaching an enthusiastic school of art practitioners about the complexity and significance of Māori art and creative expression. Be inspired by a deeper understanding of Māori history and culture.

Our mission is to provide accessible and affordable adult education classes for our community.
