The Heart of Yoga: Intimacy with Body and Breath
Two days of workshops with Mark Whitwell.

Mark is interested in developing an authentic yoga practice for the individual, based on the teachings of Krishnamacharya and is son TKV Desikachar, with whom he enjoyed a relationship for more than 20 years. Mark's teachings clarify the profound passion and relevance of ancient wisdom to contemporary life.

Day One: Grounding your Personal Practice in the Great Tradition
For Yoga to really begin, we have to step out of the studio and into an authentic home practice: actual, natural, non-obsessive and daily. We don't have to tailor the person to Yoga, we tailor the Yoga to the person. Through group discussion and practice, we establish how to each do our own practice in the way that is right for us, appropriate to body type, age, health, culture, and capacity. Rather than presenting any one style of yoga, Mark teaches the principles of Yoga as passed down by 'the teacher of the teachers', T. Krishnamacharya, which you can add into any style you like to practice/teach in order to make it powerful, efficient, enjoyable and safe.

Day Two: Yoga as Intimacy
Residing as witness to everything is not the principle practice of Yoga — this kind of awareness is an effortless gift arising from the principle practice, which is intimate connection, relationship to body, breath and all of life. Trying to practice awareness without a genuine yoga practice can just lead to dissociation, or 'spiritual bypassing'. Mark leads discussion and practice to restore Yoga as besotted connection with ourselves and all, rather than contemplation towards a future result. In intimacy there is clarity of mind and all things are given.
Both days will also serve as a masterclass in teaching without hierarchy, and navigating the teacher-student relationship with mutual equality and respect. This is relevant both to existing yoga teachers and to all our other relationships in life.
