Take inspiration from the superheroes in our starry sky, play with fluro colour, patterns and shine in your own mask on Saturday 17th August at the Hutt Winter Festival ‘Back to the 80s’ dance party. These workshops are inspired by the exhibition, Maiangi Waitai: Ātea-ā-rangi—Interstellar, at The Dowse from 15 Jun – 20 Oct 2019.

All ages, bookings not necessary, just drop in and make a mask!

About the Maiangi Waita exhibition:
Bursting with bright colours, magical symbols and cross-cultural characters, Maiangi Waitai’s art is all about exploring the mysteries of the universe. In her newest project made especially for The Dowse, Maiangi re-imagines oral history traditions related to the Matariki constellation. Creating a superhero figure for each star, complete with its own packaging, she shows us a unique way to consider some of the ideas celebrated in Aotearoa New Zealand during the Māori New Year. A fun, all-encompassing experience for the whole whānau, this vibrant exhibition explores empowerment, nurturing each other, generosity, gratitude, protection of culture and the environment, working together and having a positive attitude.

About the Artists:
The Dowse Education Team bring The Dowse exhibitions to life for school groups through creating fun and educational art activities that link the curriculum with the exhibitions.

Part of the Hutt Winter Festival, www.huttwinterfestival.co.nz, 15-17 August 2019.
