Matariki Allstars - Aotearoas’ premiere music kaupapa celebrating the Māori New Year and our established music acts.

2019 Line Up - Tiki Taane, Che Fu & the Krates, Ria Hall, Laughton Kora
with local acts: The Hype, DJ Nero, Jo'el Komene, TK Rolleston

This year we welcome to the atamira the one and only Tiki Taane. Renowned as much for his powerful, headlining live performances as he is for the anthems he writes and produces, Tiki’s extraordinary ability to rock the mic as both a gifted performance MC and/or a solo acoustic performer is something to be experienced firsthand. Although affectionately known as ‘King of the Dubs’ in NZ, Tiki’s musical influences and appeal are broad, traversing from dubstep, reggae, drum n bass and hip-hop, to more contemporary pop/rock sensibilities.

Back again our favourite local soul singer Ria Hall. Born and raised in Maungatapu, Tauranga, bilingual singer Ria Hall used her hometown’s history as inspiration for her powerful debut album, Rules of Engagement. The title came from a letter that Henare Taratoa (Ngāi Te Rangi) sent in 1864 to the first Governor of New Zealand, Sir George Grey, outlining a code of conduct for The Battle of Gate Pā (Pukehinahina) – a key battle of the New Zealand Wars. Both political and personal, the 2017 album established Hall as one of the most thoughtful voices in New Zealand music.

We welcome another rangatira to the atamira, Che Fu & the Krates. With two multi-platinum albums and two that went gold, Che Fu is one of the best-selling hip hop acts to ever come out of New Zealand. With the most top ten songs of any individual in New Zealand music history, Che-fu is one of the country’s most successful and beloved recording artists. Originally coming to the attention of Aotearoa NZ in the early 90's as one of the original members of iconic kiwi rock band Supergroove, Che went on to forge a career as a solo-artist writing and recording hip hop/ soul chart topping songs such as "Chains" and "Misty Frequencies", and platinum selling albums such as "2b S. Pacific" and "The Navigator".

Laughton Kora - Laughton was busier than ever in 2017/18 performing solo, and with his band as Laughton Kora & Friends, he is aslo a member of NZ Marley All-Stars, Fly My Pretties & Kinetic. Completing a tour of Northland in 2018 with Tiki Taane & Ria Hall and performing with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra in 'APO Does Disco.' As Laughton is gets ready to release his much anticipated EP-expect to be taken on a journey of electronic funk with that will tantalise the ears, give you the overwhelming urge to party harder & leave you wanting more.

Kaupapa
In our traditional Māori history, Matariki heralds the beginning of the New Year entering into a season of preparing and planning for the year ahead. It also epitomises a mother (Matariki) surrounded by her tamariki; Tupu-a-Nuku, Tupu-a-Rangi, Waitī, Waitā, Waipunarangi, Ururangi, Pōhutukawa and Hiwa-i-te-rangi. In other traditions and in Polynesian societies there is the belief that Matariki is a male star. It is also known as Pleiades in western culture. Historically the Bay of Plenty is the landing place for the Tākitimu, Tainui, Mātaatua and Te Arawa waka, in the great migration from Polynesia. The map used by our tīpuna to arrive in Aotearoa and establish ourselves as tangata whenua, was written in the stars. Matariki Allstars celebrates this accomplishment.

A male and female star of Māori decent impacted the recording industry when in 1927, Deane Waretini & Ana Hato became the first recorded artists in New Zealand history, recorded at Tonuhopu marae in Ohinemutu, Rotorua, Bay of Plenty. It is our intention to showcase our current musical stars and continue that legacy, providing a vehicle for Aotearoa creative artists to tell their stories and connect to the people.
