Rotorua Museum

Rotorua Museum are hosting two weeks of Matariki themed drop-in crafts over the July School Holidays. Come down to the Pop Up Shop (1201 Eruera Street) and join in the fun between 10am – 2pm on weekdays.

Week One: Monday 8 – Friday 12 July 2019
Have fun painting Matariki themed rocks, wait for it to dry and hide it around Rotorua for others to find. See if someone finds yours by visiting the @RotoruaRocks Facebook page. Can you find any rocks other people have hidden?

Matariki, a star within the cluster of the same name, loves to gather people together, and to connect with our environment. She encourages us to do the same, as often as possible, so go and share your decorated rocks for others to be together and find.

Week Two: Monday 15 – Friday 19 July 2019
Decorate a paper cup ‘pot’ and learn how to plant a bean seed. You will be given instructions on how to look after it and help it grow once you get it home.

One of the larger stars in the Matariki star cluster is called Tupuānuku. She spends her time making sure all the different growing plants have everything they need to grow big and strong so they can produce kai (food) rongoā (medicine) and kākahu (clothing materials).

Maori astronomers experts looked to the Matariki star cluster to find out how abundant the upcoming year’s harvest would be – how abundant will your bean be?
