This exhibition showcases a selection of the works donated to the Gallery over the years by Nigel Brown and his partner Sue McLaughlin. Born in 1949, Nigel Brown is widely acknowledged as one of our most important figurative artists and most significant narrative painters. For more than forty years, Brown has used his art to address social, political, and environmental issues.
His distinctive visual language uses recurring motifs, stylistic features and symbolic characters which reveal important aspects of New Zealanders and their identity. The works in this exhibition cover the time period 1983 – 2013 and include many paintings from when the couple lived at Cosy Nook on the southern coast. Now based in Dunedin, this exhibition encapsulates the couple’s parting gift to Southland.
