If you are new to painting, an evening class at Creative Arts Napier is a great place to start!

And if you’re not a beginner, this class will give you the freedom to explore mixed media at your own pace. So if you want to get a little bit experimental and try out some more advanced techniques, sign up and join in the fun. You can refresh your skills and/or extend them, while having fun at the same time.

Expert tutor Helen Dynes will guide you through the whole process over a series of 10 evening classes, in the relaxed and comfortable atmosphere of the CAN workshop.

You will need to bring some paints and paper, board or canvas to work on plus brushes and drawing equipment.

As full instruction of every class starts promptly at 6pm, please arrive to each class with a few minutes to spare.

Pre-payment secures your place. You can pay at the front desk or online.
Please contact bookings@thecan.co.nz for details.

What to bring:
- Visual inspiration! (Photo’s, drawings, magazine snips etc)

Canvas:
Each subject determines the size/scale of the canvas you buy. (Warehouse stationary often have great offers on, and you will get 10% discount at Humanities Books & Fine Arts on Karamu Road, Hastings, or ArtZone, Taradale, as a member of Helen’s class).

Paint: You will be working in acrylic or oil so if you have paints bring them along-we can have a look at what you have and Helen will recommend additions for your palette. If you have no paints yet, Helen has some at CAN to use on the first session.

However, please have as a minimum a 1” size synthetic or bristle brush for applying an initial wash to your canvas. A range of flat, round and filbert brushes are useful and Helen can show examples and discuss your needs.

About Helen:
Helen Dynes studied Graphic Design to Masters level in the UK and have taught art in tertiary education for over 30 years, including Art as Therapy at Hawkes Bay regional Prison, for almost 5 years.

She emigrated to NZ in 2003 and joined the HB art trail. Helen teaches weekly painting workshops at the CAN (Creative Arts Napier, Byron St) and offer private tuition from her home studio by arrangement.

She is primarily a people painter and loves painting the human figure. Inspirations have included Art Deco, the Royal NZ Ballet Company, and recently painting directly from life at the Florence Academy of Fine Arts for Realist Painters, Florence, Italy, exploring the techniques of the Old Masters.

Helen’s style is naturalistic and she enjoys expressing the beautiful interplay of light and shadow on the human form, working mainly in oil or acrylic on canvas. Her work is held in private collections throughout NZ and overseas.
