‘Painting Pleasures’ is the latest work of Helen Dynes’ Tuesday morning Painting Group that meet at Creative Arts Napier. In total there are 9 artists exhibiting, including one high school student who attended a recent all day workshop last year.
The students were given an open theme, but as the exhibition is being held during Napier’s annual Art Deco celebrations, you will find several Art Deco inspired images on display.
One aim of the exhibition is to demonstrate that’s it’s by an art group. Included are ‘studies’ that were carried out in class, eg. a Monet inspired subject, and a tonal value exercise where all the students worked from the same starting point to learn certain principles.
Join Helen Dynes and the artists to celebrate the opening of their exhibition on Friday 8 February, 5-7pm. All are welcome, and light refreshments will be served.
About Helen:
Helen studied Graphic Design to Masters level in the UK, and taught art in tertiary education for over 30 years, including ‘Art as Therapy’ at Hawkes Bay regional Prison, for almost 5 years;
“I emigrated to NZ in 2003 and joined the Hawke’s Bay Art Trail. I teach weekly painting workshops at the CAN (Creative Arts Napier, Byron St) and offer private tuition from my home studio by arrangement.
I am primarily a people painter. I love painting the human figure. Inspirations have included Art Deco, the Royal NZ Ballet Company, and recently painting directly from life at the Florence Academy of Fine Arts for Realist Painters, Florence, Italy, exploring the techniques of the Old Masters.
My style is naturalistic and I enjoy expressing the beautiful interplay of light and shadow on the human form, working mainly in oil or acrylic on canvas. My work is held in private collections throughout NZ and overseas.”
