Photograph the Forest – Understand Nature

What to bring:
A photography device – this could be your camera, or your telephone or tablet - as long as it can take photographs. Please note this event will be delivered at an introductory level and is suitable for beginners who wish to know how to take better photographs with their device/ camera
Clean walking footwear
Drinking water and snacks
Warm clothes and raincoat
Optional: A download cable for connecting your camera/ device to a computer (only if you wish to have help downloading these afterwards)
Optional: Download the free iNaturalist app onto your smartphone/tablet beforehand. This will help you identify plants on the day.

Accessibility:
The walking track requires a low to moderate level of fitness.

Where to meet:
The bottom carpark of AH Reed park (on Whareora Road) 10am Saturday 14th. Please note that this event may be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. All registered participants will be notified on the morning of the 14th if so.

What to expect:
NorthTec is hosting a free community photography and plant identification event to help celebrate Conservation Week 2019. This event will be structured in two parts.

The event will begin with a guided walk through AH Reed Park with the NorthTec photography department and one of NorthTec’s conservation and environmental tutors. During this time (10- 12), these experts will be on hand to help you take photographs of the forest with your cameras/ devices, whilst you learn more about some of the plants in A H Reed forest.

After a short lunch break the event will resume at the Shutter Room (Photography gallery opposite the entrance to the Whangārei Public Library) from 1-2. During this optional part of the event you will be assisted to download your images, and if you wish to, you will be able to share your best photographs with the Department of Conservation, who may use these for future promotion. Participants may choose to only attend the morning forest walk part of this event.

Please note that this event is within a forest containing Kauri trees. Kauri Dieback is a disease that lives within the soil. In an effort to protect the Kauri of AH Reed Kauri Memorial Park please ensure your shoes are clean and free of dirt before the event. You will be shown how to make use of the Kauri Dieback footwear cleaning stations within the park on the day, and you will be required to stick to the tracks when photographing.
