A fun family Free to enter event on the stunning Picton Foreshore. Queen Charlotte College Kapa Haka are on stage first to open the festival and if available a fly over with acrobatics.

Our continued goal is very much about bringing families together, in a free fun environment, celebrating the unique maritime heritage of Picton. We have established a professionally operated, safe, enjoyable annual event for the whole family and we are excited that it has now become an event in its own right, proudly occupying Wellington Anniversary weekend on the calendar.

We are determined to keep the festival free to enter as entry fees to these types of events are rapidly becoming beyond financial reach of the average kiwi family.

The purpose of the PMF - a registered charitable trust - is to raise funds and create a fundraising platform for other non-profit organisations, thereby providing support for the benefit of needy and deserving groups, individuals, community organisations and projects within the Marlborough community particularly with the emphasis towards youth.

An example is the local Clinker & Classic Boat Society who have built Dory Boats for our youth to learn how to row. The Picton Girl Guides help with this part of the event. Another highlight is taking a free ride in one of the beautifully restored Clinker Boats. Rarangi Life Savers are the safety boats for the Raft Race and Build a Boat which brings the crowd out and down to the foreshore.

The Races are in different categories from 8 years up. The first, Build a Boat was very successful in 2018 with five teams participating - the sub committee got together all the equipment and the teams built their boat on the foreshore before they raced them in the sea! Cash prizes are awarded for the winners with thanks from Marlborough Sounds Marinas.

At the event we have local youth talent performing on the stage (sponsored by Kiwirail & MDC) and also Goodtime Music Academy (sponsored by Creative Arts) come over from Wellington and teach around 50+ primary school age children how to make music out of rubbish bins.

Other entertainers are bought in from around New Zealand and perform with the children and in the evening the party begins with a dance band and of course the finale - the fireworks display at 10pm so the families can watch together. Treasure Island (sponsored by Bluebridge) is for the preschoolers and up, where face painting and making Maritime Themed goodies to take home. The best dressed competition is always a great thing to see and judge on the day. The bouncy castles are loved by all.

New Zealand King Salmon have salmon filleting or pining during the day who sponsor our MC's for the day. It's harder than you think!

The food stalls are great to wonder around to choose what food is available for the day. Each year we have a selection from lots of different nationalities. A few craft stalls also come to sell their wares.

Our face book page pictonmaritimefestival is where you can look at from previous years photos.

Mark the date in your calendar, 19 January 2019 and we will see you all there.
