From Katherine Mansfield to Witi Ihimaera to Hera Lindsay Bird, Frank Sargeson and Chris Tse, New Zealand has a rich library of queer writers. But the critical response to their work glosses over any queer content. In a heartfelt essay on queer writing in New Zealand, published on the Pantograph Punch last year, Jackson Nieuwland notes: “we need to hear queer perspectives on [a] book in order to gain a fuller understanding of how the work operates.”
Jackson will chair a conversation between Pip Adam, Robin Peace, Chris Tse and Rebecca Hawkes exposing the audience to some of the impressively wide range of LGBTQIA+ writing being produced currently in Aotearoa, to talk about the connections and differences between our queer writers, and where queer NZ writing is heading in the future.
This is an event involved in the Featherston Booktown Festival on Friday 10th, Saturday 11th & Sunday 12th May celebrating everything to do with books, writers and reading. The three-day programme includes writing workshops; poetry readings; talks by leading authors and illustrators; and a book fair including stalls with rare and second-hand books. There are also events specifically for children.
