Join us for an Exhibition preview- Tuesday 4th June 5:30-7:30pm.

In ‘Come in Rain or Shine’, Rachael Dewhirst takes inspiration from wilder New Zealand landscapes. Mountains, Swanndri and floral motifs are incorporated into her canvases, offering moments of symbolism amid impasto applications and translucent washes. Her intention is to relay the feeling of exhilaration and energy felt in nature through the application of paint.

Expressionist in her technique, Dewhirst is an emerging artist whose practice explores chance and spontaneity. One can not help but feel optimistic when viewing her work as her application boldly demonstrates a joy and pleasure in the act of painting.

“I love the process of painting… but a lot happens by chance… for me the best work is made when I am fearless…” she states. Dewhirst’s work sits somewhere between abstraction and representation, her approach is to consider the canvas as an area for investigation into paint practice itself.

The abstract image and Dewhirst’s gestural paint strokes convey the harsh winds and unforgiving terrains in a surreal cut-and-paste environment, perhaps drawn from a coarse memory, or a feeling conjured by the imagination and captured in paint. These techniques tie in with her Matisse-like aesthetic, making reference to the modernist artist’s use of collage, light, and colour.

Dewhirst’s recent collection hands control over to a certain automatism, a collaboration of both conscious and unconscious effort. She acknowledges that “a lot happens by chance,” and there is a spirit of playfulness and an excitement in following and interpreting her unique vision of the New Zealand terrain.

Stop by Warwick Henderson Gallery to see a wonderful new collection of paintings by Rachael Dewhirst. ‘Come in Rain or Shine’ will open on June 4th, and will run until June 22nd.
