Resourceful Skill Workshops for Tamariki

Social enterprise Rekindle is dedicated to creating opportunities for resourcefulness, or making what we need from we have around us. The organisation shares creative skills to transform undervalued resources through craft.

During these spring school holidays, Rekindle is offering the following workshops:
- Doll-making with tī kōuka leaves
Tī kōuka cabbage tree leaves are such an abundant and multi-purpose material that we can find all around us.

This fun workshop will teach kids how to make a simple doll with cabbage tree leaves. It is perfect for older kids, 8 years and up – those comfortable working with scissors.

Please note: 8 to 11 year olds require caregiver supervision.

- Harakeke weaving for tamariki
During this workshop, which is an introduction to a wonderful resourceful and traditional craft, Adrian will share his love of harakeke/flax weaving or raranga.

Children/youths will learn how to weave through a project to suit beginners, such as making putiputi (flowers) or ika (fish). They will also learn some of the basic concepts of tikanga (customary protocols) and hear stories.

Please note: Caregiver supervision is required.

Pocket doll: An introduction to dollmaking with Hilary Jean Tapper

Children/youths can learn how to make their own simple doll from the resources they have around them with dollmaker Hilary Jean Tapper.

Create an enchanting 12 centimetre doll by hand. Participants are also welcome to bring any preloved fabrics from home that they would like to make their doll from, as well as sewing materials.

Please note: 10 and 11 year olds require caregiver supervision.

- Block printing with Kuva Zakheim

Experience the incredible world of block printing!

Kuva Zakheim will take you on a journey into the mysterious and rich history of Indian hand-block printing and share his knowledge and practice of this tradition.

You will have the opportunity to block-print an item from your own home or closet.

Please bring a shirt, skirt, pants, bag, pillowcase – something you would like to give new life with block printing!

Please note: 7 to 11 year olds require caregiver supervision.

- Spoon carving for youngsters

Come along and learn how to make a spoon with your youngster!

This workshop is an opportunity for young people and an accompanying adult to work closely together to carve a spoon from green timber.

Children will learn basic whittling techniques with a straight and curved whittling knives, and hear about the ancient tradition of woodworking.

Please note: Each child must be accompanied by a caregiver for one-on-one supervision.

- Children's chopsticks

Kids, learn to carve your own chopsticks! Using local wood and a knife, you’ll make some beautiful chopsticks you can use and treasure.

Perhaps they might even travel with you and replace disposable chopsticks.
