Resoursonance: Taonga Pūoro Edition

Before modern musical instruments existed, humans had to make music somehow - using what resources were available around them. Come and rediscover the age-old art of resourceful music making - Resoursonance!

Newtown Community and Cultural Centre is pleased to host this Resoursonance workshop, with a particular focus on taonga pūoro (traditional Māori musical instruments) as an example of how music can embody principles of environmental sustainability. Three local practitioners of taonga pūoro, Ruby Hinepunui Solly, Ricky Prebble and Sam Palmer, will join musician and co-founder/co-ordinator of The Rubbish Trip, Liam Prince, in exploring how the history, tikanga and techniques of making and playing taonga pūoro can teach us about the natural world and its cycles.

This indoor session will focus on techniques for making sounds, showing how you can do this with a huge range of everyday objects. To do this, please **bring an object from home** with a hole - e.g. plastic bottles, prescription medication bottles/containers, off cuts of hose/plumbing pipe, or something else you might find!

We'll also be asking: what can music teach us about wastefulness? We'll chat about general principles and practical actions that help to minimise waste, highlighting music as one specific area in which a resourceful, waste-conscious approach can help you to reduce your rubbish in all areas of life.
