Beginning and ending at the Croquet Club in the beautiful Victoria Esplanade this walk takes you alongside Manawatu River, through picturesque native bush and up to some fantastic viewing points.
From Victoria Esplanade, you’ll be taken alongside Manawatu River and across the Fitzherbert Bridge where you’ll catch views out across to the Tararua Ranges and along the river. You’ll be taken through Bledisloe Park into native bush, before some decent stair climbs that will take you up and into a number of small reserves where you’ll get to experience great views across the city, out to the Tararua and Ruahine Ranges, and across to Massey University.
With many stopping points across a variety of walkways, you will have time to learn more about the area and enjoy the beautiful scenery, making this a very rewarding walk hosted by the local guides of the Manawatu Striders Club.
Please bring adequate food and drink, and ensure you are wearing appropriate footwear.
After this walk, there is the opportunity to enjoy a rest, some conversation and a refreshment at the Esplanade Café in Victoria Esplanade, or make the most of this early start and head off to join one of the other walks in the festival.
OPTIONAL: At the end of the walk you have the option to be taken on a guided 30 minute tour through the newly opened Wildbase Recovery Centre, which is located within Victoria Esplanade. Wildbase Recovery Centre care’s for NZ wildlife rehabilitate from illness and injury.

Distance: Approximately 13km
Walking Time: 3.5 – 4.5 hours
Cost: $5 per person. Refreshments at the cafe are at your own cost.
Depart: Croquet Club, Victoria Esplanade, Manawaroa Street, (off Fitzherbert Avenue), Palmerston North. Car park available next to the Croquet Club/Striders/Cricket Rooms (behind Esplanade Cafe) – Briefing starts at 8.30am, with the walk commencing immediately after the briefing.
