Join us for a talk, with artist Jermaine Reihana, on ancient Maori rock art found throughout Aotearoa and its influence on many well known artists.
Reihana is the curator of Rock Art Aotearoa, a current exhibition held at The Depot Artspace, which features images of ancient rock art, or cave paintings, discovered in sites around Aotearoa. It shows how these images have been, and continue to be, referenced in contemporary works by both Māori and Pākehā.
Rock Art Aotearoa touches on many issues, such as colonisation, cultural appropriation, the sanctity of tradition versus the inevitable metamorphosis/evolution of cultural forms and symbols and the subsequent subversion of history.
Kicking off at 6:15pm with drinks.
