Mia Straka is an established contemporary jeweller who enjoys pushing her practice into larger scales and settings with installation/object art and interactive projects.
Straka will take over the Allpress Studio Auckland for two weeks with jewellery and objects using scavenged and flea-market materials made during a one month Berlin art residency in 2018, juxtaposed with work made with the same ethos back in NZ.
Schmetterlinge translates as butterflies, referencing metamorphosis at a global societal level as we move towards environmental sustainability, adapt to mass population movements and climate change. The work focuses on ideas of transformation, reusing/reconstructing waste materials and disused objects as adornment for the Anthropocene.
The exhibition is open daily to everyone, with a special opening evening on Tuesday 9 July, 5:30-7:30pm.
Straka will be on site daily 10am-12:00pm.
Works are for sale and you're welcome to touch, try on, and write your imagined past/present/future for the works in handmade journals on site.
The evening is supported by Thornbury Wine and Workshop6 Jewellery Studio.
