Come and hear about our kiwi conservation work. There will be an opportunity to see a kiwi chick at the end of the talk (subject to availability on the day and the weather).

After an educational talk on kiwi at the main shelter, we will walk around Lake Opouahi to discover native fauna & flora. This will involve 45 mins walk on the track which can be slippery and muddy in some places. Suitable for kids over 5+ years old. Adult supervision required for children.

*Booking essential. Cost: $40 for adult and $20 for child
To book a tour, please contact Kahori (admin@ecoed.org.nz) phone: 06 877 1213.

This talk may be cancelled in case of bad weather, or not enough booking (minimum 10 people required).

This is a fund-raising event for Environment, Conservation and Outdoor Education Trust (ECOED). All money raised will be used to protect kiwi in Kaweka Forest Park.

About the Kiwi Crèche & ECOED
The Kiwi crèche was established by ECOED Trust in 2008. The crèche is 9km inland from Tutira, it is a 40ha pest-free area surrounded by a 3.3km pest-proof fence. Kiwi chicks are taken from the wild and brought to the safe haven to grow until they are deemed able to defend themselves against a stoat attack. ECOED aims to integrate outdoor education, environmental education and conservation in Hawke’s Bay. We have released over 250 juvenile kiwi back into the wild to date.

Kiwi chicks at the creche are checked monthly for health checks. The educational talk is scheduled on the day of these health checks so that people can have opportunities to see a kiwi in their natural environment.
