Following the success of our previous weekly screen printing class for beginners, we now have a weekly mixed ability evening class available!

You may be a complete beginner to screen printing, or have completed a CAN beginners course before and want to extend your skills – wherever you are at, we will cater the course for your individual needs.

Join us in the relaxed atmosphere of the CAN, learn new skills and print away to your heart’s content. Lisa Feyen will guide you through the whole process of stencil making and printing on paper and fabric, helping you to achieve the results you want, and making sure you have lots of printed goodies to take home. We will offer you the opportunity to own your own screen at the first class, which you can purchase for $55.

Cost: Total for 8 classes $200 ($25 per workshop)

To book: Contact bookings@thecan.co.nz or call the CAN 06 835 9448. Pre-payment for the course ($200) secures your place. Maximum 8 students per class.

As instruction is given at the beginning of each class at 6pm, we recommend that you arrive a few minutes before.

The programme:

Students will learn:
- an understanding of the concept of stencil making
- how to create successful designs translatable to screen printing through hand cut stencils.
- how to cut multiple stencils required for multiple colour printing
- how to register the prints for successful multi-colour printing
- an understanding of repeat patterns
- Cutting techniques
- Colour blending

At the end of the course you will know how to produce:
- A limited edition of art prints
- Tee shirt prints
- Greeting cards
- Tea towel prints

…in fact, you can print on any appropriate flat surface that will take ink!

You will need to bring:
- An “X-acto” knife or similar (this and the Fiskars brand are available at Warehouse Stationery) plus blades (these need to be pointy for fine cutting)
- If you have one, a cutting mat
- A roll of sticky back plastic

As the course progresses, you might need to purchase some other items (such as ink, paper and fabric), but we will let you know in plenty of time!

About Lisa Feyen:
Lisa is an artist/printmaker based in Napier, who teaches workshops in a variety of printmaking techniques both at the CAN and EIT. Her style is structured but relaxed, with a step-by-step approach that will allow you to develop your confidence at your own pace.

Feedback from one of Lisa’s students from the May/June screen printing classes:

“Thank you for running such an excellent screen printing workshop over the last eight weeks. I’ve really enjoyed it and learned a great deal. You’ve taken us through the process in a way that’s been easy to absorb and kept everyone engaged, regardless of experience.

You’ve managed to walk the difficult line between being available and supportive without being intrusive and directive. Nicely done. It’s been fun to learn with the group in such a lovely venue.” - Rachel Knight

Lisa also works part time at the CAN as our marketing coordinator, and volunteers her time to coordinate the local community printmakers’ group Hawke’s Bay Inkers.

While Lisa’s passion for all things print is pretty evident, her own particular love is for etching. You can view examples of her work by visiting www.lisafeyen.com.
