Welcome to our classic retrospective of Witch-themed cinema, all screening during the spookiest month of the year: October!

Witches are a recurring staple of genre cinema, often providing an excuse for stylish exercises in cinematic form. Atmospheric drive-through B-Movies such as "Night of the Eagle" and "City of the Dead" are both riveting examples, as are Dario Argento’s memorable giallo films "Suspiria" and "Inferno".

With films like Michael Reeves’ "Witchfinder General", the violent and lurid potential of the material becomes particularly pronounced, but so does the inherent thematic underpinnings, particularly around gender injustice and the plight of women in the domestic sphere. We see this in many of the films in our programme, ranging from the artful, yet emotionally excruciating Carl Theodor Dreyer film "Day of Wrath" to the far lighter and hilarious Veronica Lake romantic comedy "I Married a Witch".

If you’re looking for less heavy material, the festival even sports a film for the whole family with the delightful Studio Ghibli flick "Kiki’s Delivery Service", and with "The Craft" we have a cult classic for all the 90s kids out there!

Come down to Academy Cinemas and collect one of our pamphlets- you'll fine something that fits your Witchy needs - whether it be comedy, drama, thriller or horror, we have it all!

Hope to catch you flying into one of our screenings this October!
