Seaweek - Dunedin Coastal Clean-up & Expo

Keep Dunedin Beautiful & Our Seas Our Future are again joining forces (with more friends this year!) for the 2019 Sea Week Coastal Clean-up.

This year’s theme is “Tiakina o Tātou Mōana – Care for our Seas”, highlighting the impact of plastic, litter and other pollutants on our coastline, seas and the marine life that live there.

Join us for a family fun event at Marlow Park (Dinosaur Park) to learn about our special coastal environment and how we can help it flourish.

The Aquavan from the University of Otago Marine Studies Centre will be joining us, bringing live marine critters and touch pools to create awareness and understanding of our special marine environment. There will be interactive educational games from DOC and Keep Dunedin Beautiful to teach us about what threatens the health of the marine environment and what we can do to help it.
Finish off the fun by getting stuck in and cleaning up the beach. Bags and gloves will be provided at the site.

Where can I do a clean-up?
Beaches and coastal environments around Dunedin. You choose the area and go for it!

Where do I get rubbish bags and gloves?
Join us at the meeting place from 10.30am and collect your rubbish bags and gloves (or bring your own pair of reusable gloves).

What are some good places to clean?
John Wilson Ocean Drive/Ocean Beach (Coastal Dune and Beach areas), Brighton, Blackhead, The Molars, you choose! (but be mindful of wildlife that may be seeking shelter in the trees and dunes!)

What do I do with the rubbish?
Bring collected rubbish back to meeting place by 12.30pm (latest) for sorting and removal.

What else do I need to know?
Low tide is 8.30am
High tide is 2.11pm

What to bring:
- Closed-toe and sturdy shoes (such as sports shoes/ cross trainers/ tramping boots)
- Warm clothing: Check the weather and dress appropriately
- Sun screen and hat
- Camera (please send photos to info@osof.org)
- Lunch and snacks
- Water

This event is open to everyone who would like to take part in keeping Dunedin’s coastline clean and beautiful, however under 18 year olds must be supervised by a parent or guardian. We recommend looking for rubbish in pairs or groups for safety (and some good company).

When you are done with your rubbish collecting, please bring it back to the meeting place for sorting and collection.
