Situated in the middle of picturesque Wellington Harbour, Matiu/Somes Island is a wonderful predator-free reserve and is a delightful place to walk around and enjoy the native plants and birds – not to mention the views!
Start your journey on a guided tour through Wellington Museum with its unique and somewhat quirky collection of artefacts inside the splendid 19th century Bond Store building, located on bustling Queens Wharf. Then head to the ferry for a short trip across the harbour whilst enjoying a classic kiwi lunch of scrumptious fish ‘n’ chips, with magnificent views of Wellington’s famous hilltop suburbs.
Enjoy the island on a self-guided tour and explore its fascinating history before returning to the mainland.
Begins at Wellington Museum 11am. Returns 3.55pm daily. 2pm & 3.55pm on Weekends. Come prepared with good walking shoes, a jacket and water bottle.
The Ship ‘n’ Chip tour includes a Museum tour, fish & chips for one, a return ferry trip on East by West Ferries to Matiu/Somes Island (owned by local iwi, Taranaki Whānui ki Te Upoko o te Ika) where you are free to roam on the Department of Conservation managed island.
