Simon Kaan is of Chinese, Ngāi Tahu and Pakeha ancestry. Land, sea and sky still dominate Simon Kaan’s works where the pictorial space is fragmented by floating, indeterminate horizon lines and colour washes to create a sense of rhythm and movement capturing the essence of place.
‘’Tuaki’’ is a suite of works that builds on a previous series of works entitled ‘Tio’. The tuaki is a kaimoana synonymous with the Otago salt waterways and gathered as part of our traditional mahika kai practices. It is a strong point of identity for the artist and resonates both memory and whakapapa.”
