Sinarella is a heartfelt twist on the children’s story Cinderella, performed with a South Auckland flavour. Written by Goretti Chadwick and Sean Coyle, the story follows the adventure of a young woman called Sinarella, who, after the mysterious death of her beloved father, lives with her demanding stepmother and unruly step family - where she is expected to do all their cooking, cleaning, and laundry, twenty-four seven. One day, she befriends a mouse, Isumu, who promises to help her to escape, suggesting that perhaps Sinarella could marry a rich prince or ‘win big’ at housie. None of these options appeal to Sinarella but, whatever path she takes, she knows she must make her own future.

Since 2014, Alison Quigan, Troy Tuua and the team at Māngere Arts Centre, have forged a new annual musical theatre production each April school holidays, bringing together the local community and the performing arts industry. Each year, performers get to experience a professional-level production and emerging talents upskill in areas of design, musical direction, stage direction and choreography. This year, Brady Peeti and Rokalani Lavea take the reins as co-directors.

Returning to the stage is local songstress Irene Folau taking on the starring role as Sinarella. Joining her are other well-known local talents Josephine Mavaega, Italia Hunt, Bob Savea and Samson Chan-Boon, supported by a cast of 40 community performers. Siosaia Folau is also back as musical director. Together with his band, Folau will be creating the scintillating sounds which have become a part of the show’s unique experience.

Last year’s production, The Wizard of Otahuhu, had two sell-out seasons at Māngere Arts Centre and Q Theatre and went on to win ‘Best Ensemble’ at the 2018 Auckland Theatre Awards.
Sinarella is a show that is full of dream-big optimism, joy and cheeky humour that will have audiences laughing and wanting to get up and join in. This is a show for the whole family and a true South Auckland community collaboration. Don’t miss out, book your tickets now!
