Sir Bob Jones to speak about “Taking the Mickey” - at the 2019 Arrowtown Spring Arts Festival
The biting satire of Sir Bob Jones, the provocative newspaper columnist, rich-lister, and novelist, will come under the microscope at an Arrowtown Arts Festival marquee event.
Sir Bob’s topic: “Satire – The Art of Taking the Taking the Mickey,” will be presented in interview format with John Lapsley the Wit’s End columnist for the Otago Daily Times.
When Sir Bob began writing his Punchlines column for Wellington’s Evening Post it was soon syndicated, and he became one of the country’s best read, and most controversial writers. His first published collection was fittingly called Wimp Walloping.
His columns remain contentious. Only last year Parliament was petitioned to remove his knighthood, after a satirical Waitangi Day piece suggested grateful Maori should mark the occasion by bringing Pakehas breakfast in bed, and weeding their gardens.
Sir Bob, brought up in a Lower Hutt state house, built New Zealand’s largest privately held commercial property company and founded the short-lived, but influential, New Zealand Party.
“Satire is not for the delicate and unfortunately its rarely examined. So I’m looking forward to Sir Bob on taking the mickey,” comments John Lapsley. “Agree or disagree with him, his columns contain some of the best written, edgiest, satire we’ve seen in this country. His novel Degrees for Everyone, is as funny as anything I’ve read – it’s superb.”
Sir Bob has published five novels, five essay collections, and books on boxing and business.
Sir Bob Jones, and "Satire, the Art of Taking the Mickey" is at the Millbrook Convention Centre, Thursday October 24th.
The event opens at 6.30 for a 7pm start. Cash bar is available.
Limited seating, so avoid disappointment by booking early.
