Taylor-Jensen Fine Arts is hosting an exhibition and sale of artworks to benefit Speladd New Zealand Inc. Based in the Manawatu, Speladd is a registered not-for-profit organisation established in the Manawatu in 1999. The organisation provides support and services for people of all ages with learning differences such as specific learning difficulties (SLD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as well as their parents/families, educators, employers and the wider community. This Sale-a-bration is a fundraiser to recognise the 20 year history of this unique community organisation.

The ‘Cash & Carry’ sale will be conducted from the changing exhibition gallery of Taylor-Jensen Fine Arts, 33 George Street, Palmerston North. Proceeds from the sale of original artwork, prints, ceramics and other work will help to fund the administration of the SPELADD programme within the Manawatu/Horowhenua Districts enabling those individuals with Specific learning Disabilities (SLD) such as dyslexia, difficulties with literacy and/or numeracy or having symptoms of ADD, ADHD or High Functioning Autism (Asperger Syndrome) to be assessed and treatments recommended.

Speladd looks at the whole person, from what they eat to how they move, feel, hear and see and how they cope with learning and developing their self-esteem and social skills. All these improved abilities for the child and the parents learning advocacy skills, means a happier family and a happier community. The aim of the organisation is to enable those with specific learning difficulties (SLD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to reach their full potential. SPELADD operates in the lower central North Island from its base in Palmerston North.

The organisation’s vision is “That every individual with SLD or ADHD has their learning needs recognised and met; and for educators and other professionals to share expert knowledge in a collaborative way for the good of all.” Its mission is “to enable and facilitate the recognition, remediation and referral of those who ‘learn differently’ to encourage their success and enjoyment of life-long learning.”

The Sale-a-bration will include original etchings, prints, original artworks, ceramics and other artwork donated by regional artists to assist Speladd in its fundraising efforts. Among the artists who have made work available for this worthy cause are Angela Walker, an etcher and print maker and Joanna Ward, a painter with a unique style on board and paper. Ward has also contributed prints featuring her naïve painting style. The sale will be run as a ‘Dutch Auction’ where the listed prices for each work will be lowered every week of the sale.

But let caution prevail…if you see something you like it might be better to purchase it when you first see it because it may have been purchased while you were waiting for the price to come down. And of course the more you spend the more money will be available to Speladd to conduct assessments, workshops, teacher training and the like. We are encouraging Speladd supporters, art lovers, art collectors and gallery goers to spend up large in support of Speladd and the very important work that the organisation does in this region.
