Wellington artist Siân Torrington is doing something different with her latest exhibition – in fact she’s doing something different with the whole idea of exhibiting.

Wanting to show all parts of her practice simultaneously, she has conceived of Studio Outings, where the artist brings her hive of activity out for an audience encounter.

Torrington’s art landscape has multiple outlets and inlets to explore, from her own works in the mediums of drawing, sculpture and collage, through to enabling others with expressive drawing classes, private and public workshops, and team-building sessions.

Over three days this month (see event details), the independent practitioner will present this array for Studio Outing #1.

“People who come for an outing will find art works that are offerings from my creative adventures: sculptures and drawings that I think of as relics, or traces, of what we bring back from the embodied experience of making," says Torrington.

“There will be a sculptural installation showing the play and experimentation of the working studio, framed 2D and 3D works for sale, and additionally, information about ways to connect with my practice to give your own creativity a lift.

“That means basically laying out the ways that you can do this stuff too – you can come and do these things, such as classes, workshops, team-building; I am a creativity enabler as well as a practising artist.”

More than simply an exhibition, Studio Outing #1 is a chance to feel welcome and involved in Torrington's practice.

“Studio Outings are an opportunity to share my work and my methods, and invite you in. Come for an outing!”

Drinks and treats provided for those attending on opening night. Please note that the building has a lift for those with mobility difficulties, but there is a single, low step at the front door which compromises full wheelchair access.

Siân Torrington is an artist who believes creative processes can challenge us, opening us to new possibilities of empathy, effective communication, and idea generation. With a decade of research and practical teaching, facilitation and public speaking experience, she shares creative processes through experiential learning and her own art.

Her work has been commissioned for public art institutions, including ‘Soft is Stronger than Hard’ at City Gallery Wellington, and ‘The way you have held things’ for Christchurch Art Gallery, as well as for festivals, and by the Public Art Fund, Wellington. She has held artist residencies in Samoa at Tiapapata Arts Centre, and at Shanthi Rd, India through the Asia New Zealand Foundation.

Torrington graduated with an MFA with distinction from Massey University in 2010, and has had numerous solo and groups shows. Her studio is in the Trades Hall building.
