Tahi Open Day

Come to Pataua North and enjoy 315 hectares of restored parkland, including wetlands, forests, surf beach, lakes teeming with bird life, estuaries, beehives and more.

You are free to wander or take a guided tour. Take this once a year opportunity to have a tour of the Tahi Honey House, or visit a beehive with one of our beekeepers.

Tour times:
Honey House - (1 hour/20 people per tour) 9:30am, 10:30am, 11:30am, 1pm, 2pm
This tour through our honey processing facility will show you how we extract the honey from the beehive, and then a look at our bottling and labeling systems.

Bee Experience - (30 mins/22 people per tour) 9:15am, 10:15am, 11:15am, 12:15pm, 1:15pm, 2:15pm

An opportunity to meet one of Tahi’s beekeepers, put on a bee suit and have a close look in a beehive. Find out all about these fascinating creatures and how honey is made. Not suitable for anyone with a bee allergy!

Dune Restoration Tour – (1 hour/24 people per tour) 11am, 1:45pm
This Tour involves a flat walk of approximately 450m across the property, past a large coastal wetland, to our dune area. Your guide will show you how we are endeavouring to restore the dune frontage, restrict erosion, and encourage the establishment of coastal dune plantings including the endangered Pimelea Villosa (Sand Daphne). Bird species that may be seen include Oyster Catcher, Dotterel and occasional Australasian Bittern.

Forest Walk (1.5 hours/24 people per tour) 10am, 12:45pm
Take a guided walk through the lower slopes of our historic mountain Ohuatahi. The walk showcases the native forest along a winding bush trail including several hills. Your guide will tell you all about the conservation project that is Tahi and answer any questions you may have. A reasonable level of fitness and suitable footwear is required. Please ensure you spray your shoes against Kauri Dieback before commencing on this walk.

Tahi Our Place - (30 mins/11 people per tour) 9:45am, 10:45am, 11:45am, 12:30pm, 1:30pm
Do you have young ones, or are less able to walk? Then take a drive through the Tahi property and see some of the wonderful transformation that has taken place here. Your driver will provide you with some facts on Tahi, and the route will take you past the Tahi Lake, wetlands and lots of native plantings.

Pa Walk (2 hours/24 people per tour) 10:30am
A more challenging walk through rich cut-over coastal forest including ancient Puriri, Kauri, Kahikatea and Nikau stands. You will be guided to the summit of the largest pa in the area which is of high spiritual significance to local hapu, Ngati Korora. Thousands of tonnes of Puriri and Kauri were logged from this area, so we are fortunate to have this remaining remnant protected in perpetuity.

A good level of fitness and suitable footwear is required. This walk is subject to weather conditions. Please ensure you spray your shoes against Kauri Dieback before commencing on this walk.

Tour numbers are limited, and all tours must be signed up for prior to the start time. Tour signup sheets and tour starting point is at the Tahi Barn (entry is 500m past the Tahi Cafe). No tours start at the Cafe or the Honey House.

There is no charge for entry or participation. Secure parking onsite. The Tahi Cafe will be open for great coffee and delicious food options.

Bring your walking shoes, togs, hat and sunscreen for a great day out.
