Martinborough museum is based in an 1894 heritage building that was originally designed as a private library and reading rooms. It is furnished in colonial cottage style plus there is a modern extension which contains historic documents, photographs and artefacts. We have an interested exhibition of moa bones, a stocking reputed to belong to Napoleon and some stunning Maori toanga.
For children there's a chance to play detective and find objects in the museum, using a clue sheet.
If you want to get hands-on there are typewriters, adding machines, windup gramophones and old party line telephones to take you on a journey into the past.
Admission is free but koha/donations are very welcome.
The museum is located right in the centre of town at No.7 The Square.
Holiday opening hours (26 December-6 February) are 11.30-3.30 every day. It can be opened outside these hours, on request.
