St. Georges Anglican Church sits on the site of the Battle of Gate Pa. Over the previous two weekends we have hosted a lecture series on the battles of Gate Pa and Te Ranga fought on 29 April and 21 June 1864 respectively.

In telling that story we are confronted with the importance of the Treaty of Waitangi for Tauranga and for New Zealand as a whole. There are many misunderstandings about the Treaty which prevent us appreciating how it might help us build a multicultural society today.

This lecture will be given by Professor of Law at Auckland University and historian Rev Dr David Williams. He will be speaking on The Treaty of Waitangi using both his research and work done on the Treaty by some of his doctoral students at Auckland University.

This is an opportunity to hear about why the Treaty came about, what happened during the days around Feb. 6th 1840, and how the Treaty came to be signed by iwi around New Zealand, and some of the key dates since.

There will be an opportunity for questions and discussion after the talks.

Dates and times:
Battle of Gate Pā with Lt Col Dr Cliff Simons and Buddy Mikaere
Sunday 27th January; 7-9pm
Sunday 3rd February; 7-9pm

Treaty of Waitangi with Rev Dr David Williams
Sunday 10th February; 7-9pm

All talks are at St. Georges Anglican Church, corner of Cameron Rd. and Church St., Gate Pā, above the Mega Mitre 10.

A koha will be collected to cover some of the costs.
