The Tara-Mana Crossing is a serious tramp over the Tararua Ranges starting on the Naenae Track and taking you from the Tararua region to the Manawatu. This walk will be led by Ian Argyle who in 2018 was awarded the Queens Service Medal (QSM) for his work on this and other tracks in the Manawatu.
Transport leaves at 8am from Palmerston North, arriving about an hour later at the end of Naenae Road in the Tararua District, for the start of the tramp.

The first part of the newly formed 2km Naenae Track is a short uphill zigzag with steps. The track then crosses a stream and follows through a dense canopy best described as goblin forest. The Naenae Track crosses the Otangane Stream then, via a paper road, leads up to Hardings Park at the top before joining the Otanganu Loop and wandering down through the historic Platinum Mines to link up with the well-known Sledge Track, where you’ll head into some of Manawatu’s most spectacular scenery with incredible views on offer.

The track runs downhill with steps in places, beside the Kahuterawa Stream and passes beside a swing bridge that leads to Arapuke Forest Park, a popular mountain bike area with over 30kms of mountain bike tracks. You’ll hear the gentle waters of the Kahuterawa Stream beside the track, as you wind your way down to the end of the tramp at the Kahuterawa Carpark.

Transport will be waiting to return you to Palmerston North, arriving back in the city about 4.30pm.

This tramp is for serious trampers only and suitable footwear and clothing are essential. Allow up to 7 hours tramping time. Bring plenty of snack food to keep your energy up, such as muesli bars, trail mix, scroggin, chocolate bars. Ensure you carry plenty of water.

Those keen folks who do both the Tara-Mana Crossing on Saturday and the Mana-Tara Crossing on Sunday will receive a certificate sent to them after the event.
