Te Manawa Museum

My dear chaps and chapesses, do raid the toybox for a radio controlled vehicle and toy tea set and come to Te Manawa to build and race your very own racing teapot.

Splendid Teapot Racing originates in New Zealand’s steampunk scene, where remote controlled cars are stripped of their bodies to be replaced with tea paraphernalia atop the electronic chassis.

Racing teapots are then navigated through an obstacle course in a time-trial competition. The day will finish with a final drag race where all teapots will compete head-to-head.

There will be prizes for fastest (and slowest) time, along with Best Teapot and a host of spot prizes.

Build Day is Saturday 25 May 3pm-4.30pm (please note change of date). BYO RC vehicle and teapot, to learn the best way to design and build your racing teapot. Te Manawa will provide some basic materials (such as glue, paint, baseboards for your teapot and some decorations) and Future's Past Steampunk Manawatu will join us to get you on your way. You'll then take your teapot home and prepare it for Race Day on Sunday 2 June 11am - 2pm (approx). A pit stop, hot drinks and the racing course will be available.

Please note that teapot racing is a frivolous, silly affair and as a result this is not a serious competition. Judges CAN be bribed, the acceptance of which is up to the individual judges. Cups of tea and cake are especially favoured. Bring your best queenly game face to give Her Majesty a great hurrah and one for your teapot as well.

Register to attend on Eventfinda or by calling Te Manawa (06 355 5000). A registration guide will be given or sent to you with in-depth information to get you underway.

Tally ho!
