James Cameron’s 1984 The Terminator is a stone cold classic. The movie that cemented Arnold Schwarzenegger’s legacy and bonafides.
When Cameron and Schwarzenegger (along with original series veteran and anchor of the entire movie, Linda Hamilton) decided to come together to make a second Terminator, it easily could have been disappointing.
Instead, they all had too much integrity and talent to make anything less than an action-adventure sequel that bettered every single aspect of the original. T2 now takes its place as one of the greatest action movies ever made.
When James Cameron makes a movie, he and his team often have to invent special effects because they often don’t yet exist. Here, they needed the T-1000 (played with ruthless cold efficiency by Robert Patrick) to morph into liquid metal, shape-shift, and attack in horrifically unstoppable ways.
Teenage John Connor (the incredibly good Edward Furlong) finds himself on the run with The Terminator (Schwarzenegger at the height of his powers), a machine he has always been warned means to kill him. Now this new Terminator appears programmed to protect him from something even worse, the T-1000, a new model Terminator sent by the machines that is, for all intents and purposes, unstoppable.
While later Terminator movies and entries would confuse and cloud the original storyline, the first two Terminators play as beautiful companion pieces about the nature of time travel, free will, the future, and human choice.
Along with that, Terminator II has some of the most pedal to the metal great action sequences you have ever seen: the motorcycle-truck chase that starts the movie, the asylum escape, the final 30 minutes that keep building amazing stunt upon amazing stunt.
