Discover how this international movement of the late 19th to early 20th centuries, which grew out of concern for the effects of industrialisation, impacted the way in which we design and manufacture every day products in today’s world.

The Art and Craft Movement started in Britain in the 1850s, before becoming an international movement spreading to Europe, North America and Japan. Based on simple traditional craftsmanship, the movement was born out of concern over the impact industrialisation was having on design, traditional skills and everyday life.

The Art and Craft Movement encouraged the revival of traditional handicrafts over manufactured consumer goods, and often used medieval, romantic or folk styles of decoration. It strongly influenced European arts up until the rise of Modernism in the 1930s, however it continued to influence craft makers, designers and town planners well into the 20th Century.

Our mission is to provide quality affordable and accessible lifelong learning opportunities for our community.
