The Boom of Bitterns are declining and what would have been a familiar sound in the past after dusk and before dawn is now a rare occurrence.
The native Bittern, also known as Matuku, is at a nationally critical status, with less than 1,000 left.
Bittern are very cryptic birds that blend into their surroundings, populations are highly fragmented and no large flocks are counted anywhere in the country. Now more than ever the Department of Conservation needs people to recognise the booming call of the Bittern.
This event is for those wanting to sign up and help the Department of Conservation survey for the Boom of Bittern in late October through to mid November.
Learn about the skills and knowledge required for monitoring this critically endangered species.
This one hour event will give you all the skills you need to get you ready to help save the Boom of the Bittern.
