Best known in these parts for his legendary Crap Music Rave Party gigs, international party icon Tomás Ford is bringing his acclaimed alternative cabaret show to Wunderbar for one night only on Friday March 29. It’s the perfect gateway show for his music; The Essential Tomás Ford is a set of his best songs, schticks and stories from eighteen years of being a late night fringe festival idiot.

It’s a hard show to describe; he croons his cabaret tunes over live electronic beats, projects David Lynch-inspired videos, wears costumes his mum’s made for him, tells unlikely-but-true stories and works his unique magic with audiences.

From a start in the nastiest house parties and dirtiest pub gigs you can imagine, Tomás has been on tour pretty much non-stop since he started, eventually finding himself the only electronic act allowed to play at a punk squat, a fixture for a decade on the Big Day Out’s Lilypad, an accidental comedy DJ sensation, a bona-fide Malaysian viral smash, the synthpop king of desert Australia, practically boo-ed out of Prague, a minor Australian poet for a bit, banned from half the venues in Queenstown, toast of the London cabaret scene and eventually concreting himself into being a hometown institution back in remote Perth. This month he won Best Dance Music Release at Malaysia's VIMA Awards. Which gives you a bit of an idea of the kind of all-over-the-place semi-career he's had and the ten thousand weird tales he's got up his sleeve.

“definitely not like any other cabaret show you’ve seen, and that’s what makes it great.” - Glam Adelaide

“Ford’s off-the-rails style might take you by surprise. But let him do his thing and you realise it all comes from a place of love. Resistance is a waste of time anyway. If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. Get weird. And have fun.” - The Scotsman

“moody, grand narrative wizard who writes really really good pop songs” - OutInPerth

“like a fever dream during a drive-in movie... This show is not a passive experience.” - Theatre Scenes NZ
